What makes this style special?

The Charcoal Drawing style works the way an artist works: first the form, then the tone. Visible hatching, soft transitions in the skin, deep shadows along the jaw and nose, and a light paper texture underneath it all. Face, gaze and expression stay exactly as they are in your photo — nothing is prettified, only told differently.

On this format the stroke is the argument. A charcoal stroke simply carries on across the seam between two tiles, where a crisp photographic edge would look interrupted. And at thirty centimetres you see every hatch as large as it is on the drawing paper itself.

Why this format?

One photo is spread across four tiles, and those tiles sit edge to edge inside the frame. So a cross of seams runs straight through your image. That is not a flaw: it is exactly why this piece does not look like a poster. You can see it is fired ceramic, in four parts, with the depth and the faint sheen only ceramic gives — and from a metre and a half away the seams disappear and you just see the drawing.
