The Magic of Watercolor

Watercolor is one of the oldest painting techniques in the world — early forms were already used in ancient Egypt and Chinese calligraphy traditions. As a recognized Western art form it flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries, with English landscape painters like J.M.W. Turner as iconic representatives. The technique uses water-soluble pigments that flow on wet paper, creating unexpected color transitions and transparent washes. It is precisely those uncontrollable flow effects — the so-called "blooms" — that give watercolor its dreamy, organic character. Portraits in watercolor have an inherent softness and romance: outlines blur, colors overlap transparently, and the white paper shines through the layers like light.
